GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 19th October.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
During the period 3rd - 12th October there was a sudden burst
of solar activity. A new cycle spot group was born on 3rd October in
the sun's northern hemisphere, at heliographic longitude 091
degrees. This is very close to the active region of a previous cycle
and there has been a dramatic effect on solar activity as a result.
The sunspot count was up to 43 by the 9th and has been relatively
high for the entire period. Solar flux levels had increased to 76
units by the 12th and averaged 73 units for the period. These are
the highest levels since last May.
The geomagnetic A index has quietened for the second week
running and it is now at quiet levels. The only unsettled day was
the 8th when the index increased to 20. This increase was an
expected one based on past rotation history. The period averaged 9
units although there was a steady fall during the period; by the
12th the level was only 4 units.
The major change in solar activity which is now taking place
undoubtedly means that a restructuring is under way and events based
on past rotational history are now less likely to occur. The solar
wind particle input during the period was very low.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F" critical frequency daily highs at Appleton increased
steadily during the period, from 5.3MHz on the 3rd up to 7.2MHz by
the 12th. This was the highest daily level since last June. The
period averaged 6MHz, which is the best average level since last
May. The improvement in ionospheric conditions was most marked in
the south - although levels in the north have risen, it is by a much
smaller proportion. The darkness hour lows have also increased, for
the third week running. The average was 2.9MHz although the 11th
reached 3.1MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequency daily highs have improved during the
period, although the overall levels are much lower than those
achieved further south. The only real good day was the 9th, when a
level of 6.1MHz was reached. However, this was offset by very poor
days such as the 11th and 12th, when only 4.9MHz and 4MHz were
recorded. There was almost no variation in darkness hour lows and
the average was 1.6MHz, much as could have been expected.
Although geomagnetic activity has quietened considerably, the
effect of this has not yet influenced the more northerly ionosphere,
especially during daylight hours. Spread F was still present on most
early mornings.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is expected to be quiet this week; the recent
spate of activity will probably decline as the active centre rotates
over the west limb. Geomagnetic levels are expected to be very
unsettled and may reach sub storm on the 23rd - the higher
geomagnetic levels will have most effect in the more northerly parts
of the UK.
There may be an improvement in ionospheric levels in the north
as the week proceeds, but the 21st and 23rd are expected to be very
poor. Daytime critical frequencies are expected to be around 5MHz,
with MUFs around 16MHz. Spread F and high noise levels could well
affect the hours of darkness.
In the south, daytime critical frequencies could reach about
5.6MHz towards the end of the week, corresponding to MUFs around
17MHz. However, the 23rd is expected to be a poor day. Darkness hour
MUFs will probably be around 8MHz.
The Orionids meteor shower will peak on the 21st.
SATELLITE NEWS.
--------------
It looks as though the OSCAR 10 satellite is not now
recoverable - the on board batteries have almost run down and there
have been almost two thousand software errors in the Integrated
Housekeeping Unit during the past 10 weeks. The two 145MHz beacons
are still operational, but they are transmitting random characters
and the transponders have ceased to work.
MAIN NEWS.
---------
Due to re-organisation of software there is no news on Morse
tests this week. In the meantime the information is available from
RSGB HQ.
RAYNET has been active in the aftermath of the earthquake in El
Salvador, which caused severe damage to the capital city, San
Salvador. Information on damage to communications and various
messages on behalf of the International Red Cross was passed. RAYNET
was able to inform the British Foreign Office that there were no
British casualties. More information should be available in next
week's broadcast.
The first issue of Connect International - which is the
Society's new newsletter concerned with packet radio - was sent to
subscribers last Wednesday. Items included in it are a report on the
first batch of digital repeater licence applications and full
details of the AMSAT-UK packet modem which is required to access the
JAS-1 satellite. There's much more, including a listing of all known
stations running AX25 who are active in the UK. Connect
International is published on the 15th of each month. For full
details of how to subscribe to it contact RSGB HQ or see the item in
this month's Bulletin. You can also look on the RSGB DataBox on 0707
52242.
Listeners may remember that the Society's VHF committee
instituted a 430MHz activity night scheme last year, which proved so
popular that it has now been re-instated. GI4FUM has offered skeds
from WO (or IO64) square and can run 100 watts to a 19 element
antenna with a good take off all round. He can be contacted via
Prestel, Mbx Number 919994201.
The VHF committee has also suggested that a 50MHz activity
night be started with a view to increasing the amount of local and
semi local operation on the band. They're suggesting that Friday
nights beginning with 24th October are used for this purpose -
stations are invited to come on the band between 7pm and midnight,
preferably on or near the hour and to call CQ.
SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS
----------------------
Special event stations this week include:-
G0AER/P and G1STP/P - between 10am and 5pm on Sunday 19th
October - run on behalf of British Aerospace Dynamics at Hatfield.
This is a one off charity event and the stations will be operational
on HF and VHF.
GB4OYC - on Sunday 19th October, run by the Yeovil ARC to
celebrate its 40th anniversary. Activity will be on HF and VHF.
GB2EMR - between 10am and 6pm on 25th and 26th October, from
the Beach Lawns, Weston Super Mare. This is in connection with the
Weston Super Mare International Endurocross motorcycle races taking
place on the sands. The station will operate on HF and on 144 and
430MHz.
And finally a reminder that the Leicester Amateur Radio Show
takes place this Friday and Saturday, 25th and 25th October. The
show will feature all the usual attractions including the grand
bring and buy stand.
The new edition of the UK callbook should be on sale on the RSGB
stand - the price is the same as the previous issue. There are more
than 10,000 changes to the information in the new callbook, so if
you're coming to Leicester make sure you get your copy.
